Sometime in November 1998, a group of people consisting of about two families decided to start a Bible Study which after one month became a fellowship at Silmer Village in Binan, Laguna under the supervision of Moonwalk Community Bible Church (https://mcbcmoments.wordpress.com/). Pastor Jorge L. Gumop-as who was then a Pastor of the United Evangelical Church of San Pedro Town Proper was regularly invited to teach and preach in this fledgling fellowship.
Pastor Jorge was trying to reform the church he was shepherding then while studying at the Grace Ministerial Academy located at Cubao Reformed Baptist Church but humanly speaking the attempt was not feasible since the church was run under the auspices of a large Chinese congregation in Manila. Pastor Jorge eventually resigned and joined the fellowship together with almost 75% of his people form his former church. He was then appointed by the Elders of MCBC with the agreement from the leading men in the fellowship to act as leader under the overseeing work of MCBC. The fellowship had very encouraging number of attendance at the outset of about 60 to 70, but it started to decline when the fellowship was moving toward Biblical Church Membership. A challenging period in the church’s beginnings.
It was January 30, 1999 when the church was formally covenanted with 28 pioneering members. Mr. Jorge L. Gumop-as was simultaneously ordained to be the Pastor of that church under the name Sovereign Grace Bible Christian Church on the same date of covenanting. The name was changed to Sovereign Grace Christian Church (SGCC) of San Pedro when it was officially registered to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the Republic of the Philippines, on March 9, 2006 (http://www.sec.gov.ph/).
In October of 2012, The church moved to their new & church owned building located in Villa Olympia 1, San Pedro, Laguna to which they continue to witness God’s gracious work of saving sinners through faithful preaching of the gospel. The church is also involved in the work of reformation among churches in San Pedro & nearby towns.
Today, year 2015, the church known to many as SGCC, has about 250 regular attenders every Sunday. It has a membership of close to 100 Christian men and women. There is close collaboration, as well, with the Trinity Baptist Church of Gloucester, England through Pastor Matthew Gamston (http://tbcgloucester.org/).
“Praise the Lord Jesus Christ for the continuous blessings!”
